There is / There are

Bu sayfada İngilizcede bir yerde bir şeyin var olduğunu söylemek için kullanılan there is ve there are yapılarını ayrıntılı biçimde öğreneceksin. Bu konu özellikle oda, sınıf, mutfak, çanta, şehir ve resim anlatırken çok kullanılır. Amaç sadece tekil-çoğul ayrımı yapmak değil; neyin nerede bulunduğunu doğal cümlelerle anlatabilmek.

1) Önce dili görelim

Önce kısa bir sahneye bakalım. Ardından neden there is ve there are kullanıldığını inceleyeceğiz.

Elif:

There is a big table in our classroom.

Deniz:

There are twenty desks, two windows, and a white board.

Elif:

There is a map on the wall, but there are no pictures near the door.

Deniz:

Is there a computer in the room? Are there any plants?

Burada ne oldu?

Bir yerde tek bir şey varsa there is, birden fazla şey varsa there are kullanıldı. Yani bu yapı “bir şeyin varlığını / bulunmasını” anlatır; o şeyin ne yaptığını değil.

2) There is ne zaman kullanılır?

Tek bir kişi, hayvan ya da nesne varsa genelde there is kullanılır.

Tekil örnekler

There is a book on the table.

There is an apple in the bag.

There is a cat under the chair.

Kısa mantık

Cümlenin başında there gördüğünde hemen “orada” diye çevirmeye çalışma. Bu yapı çoğu zaman “var” anlamı verir.

There is a book on the table. cümlesi “Masanın üstünde bir kitap var.” demektir.

Temel kural: Eğer bahsettiğin şey tekilse, yani bir tane nesne, kişi ya da hayvan varsa, çoğu zaman there is kullanırsın.

3) There are ne zaman kullanılır?

Birden fazla kişi, hayvan ya da nesne varsa genelde there are kullanılır.

Çoğul örnekler

There are two books on the desk.

There are three cats in the garden.

There are many students in the classroom.

Kısa mantık

Eğer sayı ya da çoğul isim görüyorsan, zihninde hemen there are yapısını düşün.

There are two books. = “İki kitap var.”

En sık hata

Öğrenciler çoğu zaman there is two books der. Bunun sebebi Türkçede “var” kelimesinin değişmemesi. Ama İngilizcede cümlenin yardımcı yapısı tekil-çoğula göre değişir.

Önce ne kadar şey olduğuna bak, sonra doğru yapıyı seç.

Neden bu kadar önemli?

Çünkü bu yapı İngilizcede “bir yerde bir şeyin bulunması” temasının temelidir. Sonraki konularda oda anlatımı, şehir anlatımı, resim betimleme ve soru sorma gibi alanlarda sürekli karşına çıkacak.

5) Olumsuz cümleler

Bir şeyin bulunmadığını söylemek istediğinde olumsuz yapı kurarsın.

Tekil olumsuz

There is not a computer in the room.

There isn't a lamp on the desk.

Çoğul olumsuz

There are not any students in the library.

There aren't any flowers in the vase.

Dikkat

Tekil yapıdaysan çoğu zaman There isn't a..., çoğul yapıdaysan There aren't any... kalıbı çok sık kullanılır.

6) Soru cümleleri

Bir yerde bir şey olup olmadığını sormak için yapı ters çevrilir.

Tekil soru

Is there a dog in the garden?

Is there an eraser on the desk?

Çoğul soru

Are there any books in your bag?

Are there any plants in the room?

Kalıp: Is there...? tekil için, Are there...? çoğul için kullanılır. Yani bu bölümde de bütün mantık tekil-çoğul ayrımına bağlıdır.

7) En sık yapılan hatalar

Bu hataları ezberlemek, doğru yapıyı kurmayı çok hızlandırır.

Yanlış: There is two books on the desk.

Doğru: There are two books on the desk.

Yanlış: There are a cat under the chair.

Doğru: There is a cat under the chair.

Yanlış: Is there any students in the class?

Doğru: Are there any students in the class?

Yanlış: There is not any chairs here.

Doğru: There are not any chairs here.

Türkçe etkili hata neden oluyor?

Türkçede “var” kelimesi hem tekil hem çoğul durumda aynı kalır. Bu yüzden öğrenciler İngilizcede de aynı şeyin olacağını sanır. Ama İngilizcede yardımcı yapı değişir: there is ve there are bu yüzden ayrı öğretilir.
